Mimulus flower essence is traditionally chosen for fears that have a clear and identifiable cause. You know what you are afraid of whether it is a particular situation, person, animal, illness, pain, event or something you anticipate having to face.
Mimulus is also associated with shyness, timidity and everyday nervousness. You may be naturally cautious or sensitive, keep your fears to yourself and find that apprehension sometimes prevents you from doing things you would otherwise like or need to do.
Indications that Mimulus may be needed
- Knowing exactly what you are afraid of such as flying, driving, public speaking, medical appointments, certain animals or being alone
- Feeling shy, timid or nervous around other people or in unfamiliar situations
- Worrying about illness, pain, accidents or other specific things that could happen
- Avoiding or putting off something because you are afraid of facing it
- Keeping your fears to yourself rather than readily talking about them
- Becoming visibly nervous when facing something you fear, perhaps blushing, stumbling over your words or feeling physically tense
- Wanting to do something but finding that fear repeatedly holds you back
When Mimulus may be the right choice
The defining feature of Mimulus is that the fear has a recognisable cause. You may be worried about an upcoming appointment, nervous about meeting new people, afraid of a particular animal or concerned about something that could happen to you. Even when the fear feels excessive, you can usually identify what is causing it.
Mimulus may also be relevant when fear shows itself more quietly through shyness, hesitation or avoidance. You may appear calm on the outside while privately worrying about situations that others seem to manage more easily.
Rather than confronting what makes you nervous, you may delay it, avoid it or hope you will not have to deal with it. The fear does not need to be dramatic. Mimulus can relate just as much to the ordinary apprehensions of everyday life as to a more established fear or phobia.
Mimulus and similar flower essences
Several flower essences from the Bach system can be associated with fear or a reluctance to face certain situations, but the reason behind the response helps distinguish between them.
Mimulus and Aspen
Both relate to fear. With Mimulus, you can identify what you are afraid of and usually describe it quite clearly. Aspen is associated with vague apprehension or an uneasy sense that something may happen without knowing exactly what you fear.
Mimulus and Rock Rose
Both relate to identifiable fear, but the intensity is different. Mimulus is generally associated with fears you can still think about and describe. Rock Rose is more appropriate when fear becomes acute and overwhelming, with a sense of panic or terror.
Mimulus and Larch
Both may lead you to hesitate or avoid something. With Mimulus, the hesitation comes from fear of what might happen. Larch is more closely associated with a lack of confidence in your own ability and the expectation that you will not succeed.
The positive potential of Mimulus
As fear becomes less limiting, it becomes easier to face situations that previously caused apprehension without allowing them to dictate what you do. You may still recognise that something makes you nervous, but feel more able to approach it with perspective and composure.
The positive Mimulus state is traditionally associated with quiet courage, confidence and a greater willingness to meet the ordinary challenges of life rather than withdrawing from them.

When taking from the stock bottle, the recommended dosage is 4 drops at least 4 times a day, especially in the morning and before bedtime. For acute situations, you may take the essence more frequently.
